I was born in Olongapo City, Philippines and moved to the United States when I was 5. I didn't know a lick of English, but I can't ever forget the feeling of being so excited to start school in America. My dad was in the Navy for over 20 years, and he was gone quite a bit, but when he was home his presence was prominent, as if it make up for the time we lacked together.

My mom and grandmother raised me while he was away at sea (and later on in the years, my younger brother and sister), and it was my grandmother who helped me with English and the extra struggles I had in the early years of school... she is an amazing woman, a writer and avid reader like myself.

And now, here I am, in love with the English language. I can't help but wonder what my life would have been like had I stayed in the Philippines. Would I still be the same girl who was in love with writing, her imagination, and checking out hordes of books from the library?

I'm one-hundred-percent sure I would be.
